How to Read a Sabian Symbol: A Step-by-Step Method

A Sabian Symbol gives you an image, not an answer. Reading it well is a skill — and a learnable one. Here's a method that works for any of the 360.

1. Describe the literal scene

Before any interpretation, say plainly what is happening. "A woman just risen from the sea; a seal is embracing her." A woman has come out of the water. A seal — a wild creature — is holding her. Don't symbolize yet. Just look.

2. Find the action

Most symbols have a verb at their center. Rising. Embracing. Resting. Building. The action is usually where the meaning concentrates, because it tells you what movement the degree makes. In the example, the action is emergence — and being met as you emerge.

3. Weigh the gift and the shadow

Every image has a bright reading and a difficult one. The same picture that shows a healthy capacity also shows how it goes wrong. A man taking a siesta at noon can mean wise self-restoration — or avoidance dressed up as rest. Hold both; the truth of how it lives in you is usually somewhere between.

The image that shows the gift is the same image that shows the shadow.

4. Bring in the keyword

Now add Jones's one-word keyword for the degree. It compresses the whole image into a register — Realization, Recuperation, Zeal — and often confirms or sharpens the reading you reached from the picture.

5. Place it in the chart

Finally, ask which part of you this degree belongs to. The image at your Sun, Moon or Ascendant reads differently — the Sun describes how you express, the Moon how you feel, the Ascendant how you arrive. Same picture, different room of the self.

Putting it together

Literal scene → central action → gift and shadow → keyword → placement. Run any degree through those five steps and you'll get a reading that's yours, not a generic lookup. Each degree page gives you the raw materials: the image, the keyword, the element and modality, and the placement notes.
