Your Sabian Symbol is simply the image at the degree your Sun (or Moon, or Ascendant) occupied when you were born. Finding it comes down to two things: knowing the exact degree, and looking up the image at that degree. Here's how each piece works.
For your Sun: a birth date is enough
The Sun moves through roughly one degree per day, so your birth date alone pins it to within a degree. That's why the free reading on this site asks for nothing else. Enter your birthday and it computes the Sun's degree and returns the matching symbol from the 360-degree index.
The Sun travels about 1° per day — so the date alone places your Sun symbol.

Find your Sabian Symbol →For your Moon and Ascendant: you need a birth time
The Moon moves about twelve to thirteen degrees a day — far faster than the Sun — so its symbol can change within hours. The Ascendant (the degree rising on the eastern horizon) moves a full degree every four minutes. To find those two symbols accurately, you need your birth time, ideally to the nearest few minutes, and your birthplace. We cover what each of these placements means in the guide to Sun, Moon and Ascendant symbols.
What if you don't know your birth time?
You can still read your Sun symbol with confidence. For the Moon, an unknown time means the degree is uncertain — sometimes the symbol is stable across the whole day, sometimes it isn't. A birth certificate, hospital record, or a parent's memory is the usual way to recover the time.
Reading what you get
Once you have the symbol, don't rush to the meaning. Sit with the image first: what is literally happening in the scene? Who is acting, and what are they doing? The interpretation grows out of the picture, not the other way around. Each degree page — for example any degree in Leo or Pisces — gives the image, the Jones keyword, and the placement context to work from.
Step by step
- Find your Sun's degree from your birth date (the calculator does this).
- For Moon and Ascendant, add an accurate birth time and place.
- Look up the image at each degree.
- Read the picture before the meaning.
